When his wife Sarah falls off the wagon and dumps him for Jacques, a drug dealer, Frank tries to get her back by reporting her kidnapped, grabbing her from Jacques' car, and wailing for her to return. After watching Christian TV and having a vision, he becomes a superhero to fight evil. He sews a costume, finds a weapon (a pipe wrench) and looks for crimes to stop. He has problems: his wrench inflicts real injury, so the cops want him for being a vigilante, his sense of boundaries is flawed, and Jacques' gang has guns. Libby, a clerk at a comic book store, becomes his sidekick, and it's time to go save Sarah. What chance do they have?

If the movie Kick-Ass wasn't hyper violent enough for you then Super might be your best friend. But if Kick-Ass was just right for you then you could easily be disturbed, alarmed, and emotionally shaken by Super. Such was the unexpected case for me. Super is a story about a man named Frank whose wife succumbs to the allure of a drug dealer, leading the man to lose his mind and, after being touched by the finger of God, becomes a superhero. This man is now the Crimson Bolt, a superhero whose only power is the ability to whack people over the head with a wrench, causing them to bleed profusely. During his preparation to become the Crimson Bolt, Frank meets a wryly, squirrelly, borderline psychopathic comic book store clerk named Libby. Libby is the only person to know of Frank's true intentions while he buys comic books to study, and so she becomes Frank's sidekick, Boltie. Together, The Crimson Bolt and Boltie set out to defeat the evil drug dealer, Jock, and rescue Frank's wife from his evil clutches. It sounds like it is all fun and games, but it's not. Super is a grotesque, disturbing, unsettling, and downright depressing film to watch.<br/><br/>Whatever you are expecting from Super will almost certainly be wrong. It is a comedy,wella drama,wellan action film. It is this mix of genres that leads it to the strangest realms, and it doesn't always succeed in where it's going. The main issue with Super is it's lack of direction. The story itself is simple, but the subtext is impossibly hard to followthe filmmaker's intentions are never made clear and the overall point of the flick is always shrouded in mystery. Is this supposed to be an ironically hilarious, over-the-top, action flick? Is it supposed to be a harsh criticism on society and it's ideas of justice and morality? Is it solely trying to be a gritty portrayal of the results of a real life super hero? Or is it all of these things? If it is, it never can find a balance between its ideas and only leaves one confused, annoyed, and pointlessly sad.<br/><br/>One of the most unsettling things about Super is the violence. I've never had a problem with ultra violent films that take the blood and gore levels to the extreme. In fact those are some of my favorite films. But there is something about Super that truly disturbed me. I think it may be a mix of the level of the violencewellits disturbing context and the twisted things that surround it. The whole idea of the film is taken on an incredibly dark route that disturbs to no end, and the characters are the same way. I love Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page, but their characters are so over-the-top in this film that it legitimately bothered me. It's impossible to really connect with our protagonists because they are justifiably insane. These two are absolute psychopaths who,the film grew darker and darker, I felt more and more like they needed to be locked up forever. This could have been intentional, but regardless it is still incredibly disturbing and almost makes me sick to my stomach.<br/><br/>As farmy overall opinion of Super goes, I'm not entirely sure how I felt about this movie. It is very different, very bizarre, and very unique in its approach to the "average citizen superhero" idea. I did laugh during the movie, and I was certainly entertained by it, despite it's graphically disturbing nature. But there's something about the movie that just doesn't allow me to form a solid opinion. I can't connect with this film on some levels and its lack of focus left me feeling a little empty and terribly confused by the actual point of the film. I can attribute any negativity to trivial things the movie possesses like plot holes and illogical circumstances, but that's not why I'm not going crazy about this movie. It's more because of its pointlessly twisted nature that lacks any kind of purpose in the grand scheme of things. There are good things about this movie, but it is so strange and so far out there that I can't say I loved it. It is one of those films that you draw your own conclusions from and there's really nothing a review can do for you.
'Super (2010)' is far more tragic than funny, only really a comedy in the blackest of senses, but actually works wella dark, twisted and violent examination of vigilante justice without ever flinching away from its consequences. Yet, it somehow still manages to make its clearly psychologically damaged and very unhinged protagonist not only understandable but also fairly likeable. While it does falter in its final moments with a misjudged, almost 'altruistic' message clearly at odds with what we've just seen take place, there's a certain charm that comes from the flick's unwavering determination to be justweirdit wants. It's this subversive streak that really carries the picture past its few faults. 7/10
Ultimately the movie ridicules the culture that compels what Cedric the Entertainer calls grown-ass men to dress up like comic-book characters,wellthe Christian attempts to co-opt that culture.
